ERYKAH BADU: The Vortex Tour Review and Setlist

Last night I had the pleasure of seeing Erykah Badu and The Roots live in concert. I have wanted to see Erykah for years, and I finally got the chance. She delivered an amazing show. The Roots were also brilliant, you know an act is good when you aren't familiar with their work but they STILL have you jamming.

Here is Erykah's setlist, I may have missed one or two (It was a 2 hr set, she did A LOT lol)

My People (Intro)
New Amerikah
The Healer
Me
My People
Soilder
Master Teacher
On & On
...& On
Appletree
Next Lifetime
Otherside of The Game
Danger
Time's a Wastin'
Orange Moon
Green Eyes
Bag Lady
(an old skool song I can't think of the name of but Janet Jackson sampled with Missy lol)
Honey
Didn't Ya Know

She has an incredible voice, but it not only her voice that I loved, she was kooky and funny, at times it was like what I'd imagine being at a Bjork show is like. Between songs at the beginning she fiddled around on her Mac and sipped from a flask, then when the band played some old country style song she stumbled around drinking from her cup pretending to be drunk!

One of the funniest parts was when she changed into a black dancers outfit and started doing modern dance/ballet moves and playing with two beach balls on stage while singing Green Eyes. She even did a bit of crowd surfing in Bag Lady.. well as much as she could security held her feet, while the front rows of the crowd had the rest of her.

Not only was she funny and kooky, she was also inspiring. She talked for a short while about the power each of us have to make a difference in the world and then launched into Solider (which is the second single) which everyone was totally feeling :D

It was a fanatastic evening, the only thing that was missing was a bit of Tyrone, which everyone was screaming for by the end but she did Didn't Ya Know, which is a personal favorite so I forgive her, and there was so much other great material played from all her albums :D
Here is Bag Lady which I taped last night.....

We don't know what to say! Get it together Taylor!

"Attorneys representing singer Taylor Dayne are fighting to get a drink driving charge against the star dismissed - because the "Tell It To My Heart" hitmaker was not over the limit.

Dayne was arrested for a DUI in March after she reportedly failed field sobriety tests.

The L.A. County District Attorney has charged the singer with one count of misdemeanor DUI, but Dayne's legal team plans to fight for her innocence.

And her lawyer claims he has a great case to fight: 'Her blood alcohol was below the legal limit.'"

"
The boys are bringing new life to their 07 saxxxy-anthem Hearts On Fire. Blazed out in its new album version glory the official release will come squished between remixes by The Midnight Juggernauts, Knightlife and Holy Ghost! It’ll be available July 5 (in 12”, CD, and digital form). A video for the single has just been finished so keep an eye out for info on that.

The official release of Hearts On Fire is rocketing straight to planet Jugular with a touch-up from everyone’s favourite neo-disco astronauts The Midnight Juggernauts, who have draped the original in atmospheric organ sweeps, glittering arena echoes and dulcet vocal harmonies. One listen will send you into a wide-eyed trip from couch to cosmos.

ERYKAH BADU [ APPLE PRO Interview ]

Read how Erykah Badu used Garageband and other software to work on her new album directly from Apple.com

'Erykah Badu is awash in creative energy. She conjures the stuff from thin air, whipping up hooks and melodies with little more than a basic backing track. Think soulful freestyle riffs and lyrics punctuated by the boom and clack of a jazzy drum kit. Yet even a steady stream of creativity like Badu’s can be diverted—for days, weeks, months, or years. In fact, five years passed without a new Badu album. Some said she had writer’s block. Some said she had lost her groove. Turns out the vibe was alive the whole time—it simply needed a new channel to flow into.'

ROBYN: Eclipse [ Video Preview ]

MUSIC GO MUSIC: Light Of Love

This song sounds like it was recorded decades ago, but in fact it's just about to be released on May 20th!

Music Go Music have the simple syrup of pop extravagance running through their veins. These arena-sized songs are composed with such savage efficiency that you find yourself humming along before two bars have gone by. They are as assured and crafted as ABBA and ELO's best songs of '76, yet Music Go Music sounds fresh.

CSS: Donkey [ New Album ]

MusicWeek.com has posted a review of the new album by CSS "Donkey".

As anyone who has seen their live shows will doubtlessly agree, much of CSS’s charm lies in their slightly shambolic approach; balloons are thrown, outfits are shed and instruments are swapped with gay abandon. At best it’s a riot.

The beautifully named Donkey, however, sees the band go decidedly upmarket, with mixing from the ubiquitous Spike Stent (Bjork, Gwen Stefani, Spice Girls et al...) giving everything within a lovely synthy pop sheen.

Indeed the name Gwen Stefani, whom the band have toured with previously, gives a good idea of where CSS are at with this album, although Donkey continues to be a riot, albeit a considerably more slick one that is unlikely to scare the horses.

Surprisingly, it suits the band. Their Brazilian eccentricities, filthy lyrics and general charm means that this album rarely loses sight of the scattergun pop approach that made CSS such a breath of fresh air in the first place.

And while the indier-than-thou crowd who first championed the band may disagree with the none-more-Eighties electro pop sounds of Move, there is a huge potential audience out there who won’t care two beans for such indie concerns.

SIOBHAN DONAGHY: Ghosts

While we patiently await new music from Siobhan Donaghy I figured I would post about her last album as if you haven't checked it it out already you must!

Siobhan got her start in the Sugababes a UK girl band, after leaving because of creative differences she went on to record 'Revolution In Me' in 2003 and Ghosts in 2007. Ghosts is a fantastic album its electro style has drawn comparisons to Madonna's Ray of Light. It was brave move for her do step away from the straight up pop of the Sugababes and go out on a limb and record this time of record but she pulled it off! She is truly a creative and unique musician you'll love her if you don't already ;)

AALIYAH: Fader Magazine Icon Edition

FADER Magazine's annual Icon Edition honors Aaliyah and her legacy...

"It only took Aaliyah a few albums to make an indelible mark on the world of pop music, but today her influence can be felt across numerous genres," said Chris Richards, Executive Editor of The FADER. "This issue not only tracks that influence, but also offers a more personal glimpse into the life of a true pop visionary."

Missy Elliott
"We was gonna save the world. We was gonna change music every chance we got. We was gonna always be family. Forever."

Mark Ronson
"If it wasn't for Aaliyah being the face and voice of [Missy Elliott and Timbaland's] sound they might have never got to where they did. They were presenting their sort of brilliant but challenging breakthrough music through this beautiful young girl who could sing it perfectly."

Kidada Jones
"I think about her all the time...Anytime she's brought up or her music comes on the radio, it’s sweet, but it definitely sounds like she found a niche before it was here. If you listen to her music it's so relevant today, but we had it so long ago."

Damon Dash
"She was already a fashion icon, she was getting into movies, she had already planted that seed. If she was alive today she would be so relevant. I see little bits of her everywhere I look, in a lot of artists."

French and Saunders: Madonna

Needs no introduction!

M83: Saturdays=Youth

M83 is a one man  french electronic group and have just released "Saturdays=Youth" produced by Ewan Pearson (Ladytron, The Rapture, Goldfrapp).  It reminds me of Cocteau Twins with a much poppier vibe.  Very 80's.  Check them out.

MADONNA:Oh what people will do for a ticket to your show

This picture raised a big LOL from us this morning, AllaboutMadonna.com report that this crazy reporter (on the left) harassed Madonna on the walk from her gym to her house this morning in London ,trying to get a ticket for her show at Radio One's big weekend this Saturday. So much going on here we aren't sure whats funnier!

a) The look on Madonna's face
b)The look on the reporter's face
c)That the reporter looks like he's about to do the f**k you arm motion or stab her with an imaginary knife
d)The bodyguard's package
e)The people gawping at the scene in the background.

Answers on a postcard please!

OH MIRWAIS: Where are you?

He produced tracks like "Music" and "Hollywood" for Madonna and now..

"Here he comes, back with a project close to his image: 100 % artistic. Pop and radical. Pop as in popular, accessible to everyone and avant-garde. Electro and Arabic, enriched with experience, he continues to imagine the future. "

- Mirwais is now half of the duo Y.A.S.

SNOOP DOGG: One Life To Live

It was a sunny spring afternoon as my Grandmother sat down to watch her stories with a nice cup of tea...

Some artists will do anything to promote themselves, even showing up AND performing on a soap opera like "One Life to Live."  Good thing we like the song a lot!

Watch SnoAp Dogg entertain the residents of Llanview.

ROISIN MURPHY: Let Me Know [ Sampled Track ]

Many of you may recognize the sample in Roisin Murphy's "Let Me Know" as "Sure Shot" by Tracy Weber. Do it Roisin, work the shoulder pads!

DOE DEERE: Supernatural

Doe Deere is bringing the 80's back with style! This is what she has to say about the making of her album 'Supernatural'

In 2007, armed with a vintage Yamaha keyboard and a more contemporary Korg Triton, I set out to emulate the pop sound of the decades past - in my bedroom studio. As I wrote and arranged the 5 songs over the course of four months, posters of Tears For Fears, Depeche Mode, and Modern Talking shot curious glances at me from the walls.

I met producer Jimmy R. Landry (Capitol/EMI) on Craigslist - a die-hard Tears For Fears fan, he liked my crazy idea of making an 80s record in 2007! In the studio we experimented with vocoder, vintage pre-amps, drum loops, and added textural guitars which brought the arrangements together.

GLASS CANDY: Beatbox

So Glass Candy, perhaps old news to some, but definitely worth a mention anyway. Their album Beatbox is amazing. They have been described as Neo-Disco. It's such a nice mellow album it makes you wanna take a nice long evening drive in a convertible with the top down :)

This is the video for Digtial Versicolor. The way it's shot reminds me of the movie 'Downtown 81' I love it!

They have a new song on their MySpace and are always posting demos so check them out!

LADYHAWKE: Back of the Van (Van She Tech Mix) [ Free Download ]

Modular is offering a free remix of Ladyhawke aka Pip Brown is the Kiwi born, Aussie bred, now residing in London artiste who stitches pure modern electro pop with the vintage day-glo disco elements of a bygone era. Ladyhawke's debut album will be released in September this year. Whilst Back Of The Van coupled with remixes by Fred Falke and Mock & Toof will be available early June.

Back Of The Van is an 80s hair brush sing-a-long that sparkles with discodust. A timewarp jam that is bringing the shimmering synth and bouncy bass of the acid-wash decade to a new audience. Whilst Van She Tech's Fire Engine Remix is a sweaty club rub, laced with a downright dirty attitude.
