I am totally unashamed to say that I am EAGERLY awaiting the return of DIVAS LIVE to VH1 this September! I mean come on, the picture above just says it all doesn't it? DIANA ROSS dressed as a purple big bird, MARIAH sporting a belly baring butterfly top, and erm who's that too the left?? ah yes, FAITH HILL (well you can't win em all can you?) all dressed to kill and trying to out sing each other.... oh the memories!
VH1 are currently running a poll to see who they should invite, this show only works with biggest and the best DIVAS (*cough* Aretha! *cough*) no imitations or lame ex American Idol contestants! Send in your requests!

LILY ALLEN stopped by Jools Holland, and gave this cute performance of NOT FAIR, her latest single. It's a little stiff but she loosens up towards the end and I love her outfit :)

It's been a minute since we last did a GIRLS ALOUD post! Their new single Untouchable is out now and this is the b-side from it IT'S YOUR DYNAMITE. The girls also kicked off their Out Of Control Tour this week in the UK. It looks kinda like the Spice Girls tour (which rocked!) and if I had there I totally would have gone to see the girls! This video is a medley of some of their older hits. Enjoy!

Ohhh tres exciting! Today we have new material from THE GOSSIP after an eternity! This one is called HEAVY CROSS taken from their forthcoming album 'Music For Men,' due June 22nd 2009, and I love it! I seriously enjoy that, erm yodeling, for want of a better word! This is such a catchy tune I'm now excited about the album!
The band also just did an interview on twitter with Dazed Digital. A transcript will be up tomorrow at the Dazed website, or if you can't wait you can decipher it yourself by looking at @dazeddigital and @thegossipband

It's flashback time! This is a great performance by two rock legends, MICK JAGGER and TINA TURNER at Live Aid in 1985. The duo performed STATE OF SHOCK and IT'S ONLY ROCK AND ROLL. Just look at the chemistry between them, I wonder if that little 'surprise' at the end was planned, judging by the look on her face it wasn't!

MADONNA will once again be the face of the upcoming LOUIS VUITTON campaign for their Autumn/Winter 2009 collection.
Following the extraordinary success of the Spring/Summer 2009 ad campaign, Louis Vuitton, its creative director Marc Jacobs, and Madonna, are proud to announce they will be collaborating for a second consecutive season.
The iconic pop star will be photographed by Steven Meisel in New York City, under the art direction of Marc Jacobs.
The first images of the campaign should appear in August issues of fashion magazines.
Source: Madonna.com
The word on the street is that the campaign will be shot this week and that the ads may feature Madonna wearing bunny ears like those seen below, that are part of Louis Vuitton's fall 2009 collection. I think M could pull them off don't you?
UPDATE: The campaign was indeed shot 4/29 according to @GuyOseary

The Union between Sweden and Norway dissolved years ago, or so we thought! ROBYN, a Sweden native joined Norwegian electro group ROYKSOPP on stage recently to perform their new single The Girl and The Robot. I think this translates better as a 'track' rather than a song to be performed live. Maybe you just have to be there? Television show performances are always a bit 'eh' for me.

Give it a watch! Comments and ratings are appreciated and loved!

I'm totally a day late and a dollar short with this one but never mind! The wonderful American Life album by Madonna was six years old yesterday. This album is one of my personal favorites, I know many people that love it as much as I do and many that hate it.
What I love about it is that the acoustic stripped down songs, really show off Madonna's voice and make the album feel that much more personal, I really feel like this one is totally 'her' without the influence of too many producers, it's just Madonna, Monte and a couple guitars. I also love the more electronic tracks, the fantastic Nobody Knows Me and Mother and Father. The only song on here that I could do without is the title track, the release of which I believe screwed up the whole release, in my opinion after that clunker of a track (and associated video mess) people didn't want to give the album a shot.
Another reason to love this album is that there were some great promo shows, and it paved the way for the brilliant Reinvention Tour, during which these songs came alive. Who can forget the glorious Nobody Knows Me and Madonna's strut down that catwalk?

I've been on a major Grace Jones kick this week after those fabulous mp3's from Paris.... in my search for Grace entertainment i came across the interview with Joan Rivers from 1984 when she was promoting Conan. It's hilarious, she discusses everything from being a nudist for a few months to slapping Russell Harty on live TV (Youtube it!) Grace is such a fascinating person and a superb interviewee!
Grace Jones on The Joan Rivers Show (1984)

It's been awhile since i've listened to some Jazz! This track is perfect for the mood today if you happen to be in sunny NYC...or anywhere for that matter! Summer is finally on it's way for us (apparently i'm skipping over Spring!). Open up your windows and blast some NOMO. The track is called Invisible Cities, and appears on the album of the same name. Release date is May 5th.

You can preview another track from the new album over at Pitchfork!

I came across these great quality Grace Jones live tracks today! They were recorded at Grand Rex in Paris on March 22 2009. They just confirm the fact that I need to see this woman live like NOW! Get To New York Grace!
She does actually have some summer dates lined up. If NYC doesn't pop up I may even be tempted to do LA!

If you are a fan of BLOC PARTY or looking to sharpen or start some remix projects, today is your lucky day! The band will release Intimacy Remixed on the 11th of May, and to mark the occasion, have made parts for three of the album's tracks available as free downloads. This means you get all the instruments and vocals separately....to make your own bangin' version of course!
DOWNLOAD THE PARTS!
Don't forget to send us your mixes when they are finished, and definitely don't forget to send them to the band!
Here is the tracklisting for Intimacy Remixed.

I've been reading about POLLY SCATTERGOOD for awhile now, and I think it's about time we've featured her on Hard Candy! She has such a beautiful girl, somewhere along the lines of Lykke Li...but just a bit!
Her upcoming single from Mute Records will be Please Don't Touch, the official video of which has just been released (you can view it below!).
The Golden Filter have given the track the remix treatment, and the label hasn't been stingy about releasing them!

If you'd like a free mp3 download of the b-side to the single, called Number 24 click here!
Don't forget to pick up the single on April 28th!

The album cover for MARILYN MANSON's upcoming release, The High End Of Low is rather, well...nothing special. I guess you could never top this, could you?
Sigh. I'm still hopeful. We're From America is promising, can't wait to hear the whole release!

WAVE MACHINES has a great lo-fi instrumentation, with a voice reminiscent of David Bowie. Thanks to Bigstereo for finding them for us, my night is a lot more chill thanks to these guys!
If you give the band your e-mail, you will get sweet 320kbps (CD Quality) download of Keep The Lights On.
Enjoy! It's worth the download....

This is one of my favorite performances by Erykah Badu, the song is I Want You, from the Worldwide Underground EP. This performance was in Europe a few years back. I love the arrangement of the song and she kills it!

There hasn't been something that's made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside in a long time, until the other night when I was sent this video. Yes, i'm aware that this video has been seen by everyone and their cat already...SUSAN BOYLE wows the world on Britain's Got Talent!

This is a great little remix of Madonna & Britney's Me Against The Music and The Spice Girls Who Do You Think You Are. It popped up on my iTunes the other day and I remembered how great it was! I used to dance my socks of to this at the student club back in the day... I recall my friend specially bringing it on a CD for the DJ to play LOL. This is a definite improvement on the original Me Against The Music in my opinion. The video for that always makes me laugh, Madonna looks like an old lady with that cane! (regardless of how many yoga moves she's fitted in to show of her, um... flexibility!)
ME AGAINST THE MUSIC (WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE MIX)

DATAROCK pull out their best Michael Jackson for the video for Give It Up, the first single from upcoming album Red. The album doesn't see the light of day until September, so here is a little remix to get you through the wait.
GIVE IT UP (KISSY SELL OUT REMIX)
Remix is not bad Kissy Sell Out does an ok job, however I prefer the video version!

This article written by my friend Sherene Schostak mashes up modern day astrology with some great music that is always floating through my iTunes. She's got a great collection! Check out the original article here or read it below! The pic above is just amazing. ;)
Now that the the planet of love, Venus (which is still moving backward or 'retrograding') has gone back into Pisces, let's check in with the almighty oracle of the iTunes shuffle function to see what the cosmic messages are for each sign at this complex alchemical juncture.
Does this mean we have to give up our narcissistic fetishes like Twitter in order to do something more compassionate, like save the world -- or at least our souls? In honor of Pisces, let's see what the gods of music have to say.

Madonna has made this statement regarding her attempt to adopt 3 year old Mercy from Malawi..
"I want to provide Mercy with a home, a loving family environment and the best education and healthcare possible. And it's my hope that she, like David, will one day return to Malawi and help the people of their country. Though I have been advised that I cannot publicly discuss the pending appeal regarding my desire to adopt Mercy, I do want to say how much I appreciate the level of support that I have received from the people of Malawi and my friends around the world."
I hope she wins her appeal and is able to give Mercy the chance for a better life.

I know I am not the only person who loves wandering into an independent record store and browsing through rows upon rows of old vinyls and CD's looking for a hidden gem, even if only for a cool record to frame! I love the atmosphere in these places, the smell of dusty old records and the fact that the staff are usually music lovers and not just snotty teenagers who could care less about music!
With digital music taking over, even major record stores like Virgin are crashing and burning so will there even be any independent ones left in the not too distant future? The first Record Store Day was held last year and was the idea of a few record store owners who felt we needed reminding about these great stores!
So go out on April 18th and support an independent record store! Many around the world have special events on with live music etc. You can visit the record store day website for participating stores.
PS among my favorites are Bleecker Street Records in Greenwich Village, NYC and Uncle Sam's in Miami Beach ;)
Here is Kate Nash performing for Record Store Day 2008...

The Yeah Yeah Yeahs stopped by Saturday Night Live last night and performed Zero and Maps. While I love the songs they played, the crowd was lacking some energy, as a result to performance was just ok. Tonight they play Santos House Party in New York, that's bound to be wild! I wish I was going!

OFRA HAZA has such a beautiful voice. A Yemenite from a small town in Israel, Haza gained international success with her single Im Nin' Alu. You may recognize her near flawless voice in tracks by Madonna, Paula Abdul and more.

Here she is at her most care-free, singing a more traditional version of the song...

You guys are gonna love these! On a whim I downloaded four acoustic MOLOKO tracks - Familiar Feeling, Forever More, Sing It Back and The Time is Now - from the wonderful Roisin Media blog.
Familiar Feeling is the stand out track for me, it is mixed with 'I keep Forgettin' (Every Time You're Near) the result is a stroke of genius! The others are all great acoustic takes on classic songs, I love the guitars on them.

Wouldn't a ROISIN MURPHY and MADONNA collaboration be wonderful?! Well a girl can dream right? Until then this mashup 'You Know Me Miles Away' I found on Ro's forum is probably the closest we're gonna get. It is Roisin Murphy's You Know Better mixed with Madonna's Miles Away. I think that blended vocals on this would have been great, but nevertheless I enjoy Roisin's vocals to Madonna's music!
Check out the wonderful Cindy Sherman inspired video for You Know Me Better below. I can't wait for a new album from Roisin, she is truly one of the most exciting and talented artists around today.

Ohh I always love a new indie band. This track is from DELPHIC, a Manchester based indie/electro outfit. They say to be 'Chemical Brothers and New Order, between Underworld and Muse. You be the judge! I love the track! You can pre-order from Rough Trade.

Catch them on tour throughout the next few months...

A few weeks ago you may remember I posted Get Up a MADONNA track from the early 80's. Well tonight I have for you three other tracks that make up the remainder of the set of songs known to fans as The Gotham Tapes.
During 1981, August 2-30, Madonna recorded four songs in a studio called Media Sound in New York City. Her then-time manager Camille Barbone from Gotham Management signed a contract for 50 hours of studio time to produce four songs Get Up, High Society (Society's Boy), Love On The Run and I Want You. A few years ago the high quality studio versions of these songs leaked and there are also lower quality rehearsal versions around.

This rare video of one of Madonna's first solo performances, Everybody filmed at Danceteria in 1982. It's spot on, I'd like to see some debuts from artists that put this much effort into their work again!
This post was a collaboration between Camille and Matt. Love it!

Here it is guys! I know you've been requesting this, sorry it took me so long to get it up! JUST JACK and Kylie Minogue tear it up with I Talk Too Much. The track was featured on the U.S. version of Jack's album Overtones which I recommend you to all go out and purchase!

I've loved KASABIAN since their debut album Kasabian. Their new track starts opens like a classic Prodigy track (Line Out is spot on), then turns even sexier as it progresses. You'll love it, just play it loud!

How could they have a title like Vlad The Impaler without a blood sucking vampire in the video? Here he is, Noel Fielding from 'The Mighty Boosh.'

Depeche Mode will be playing a FREE concert in LA on April 23rd for Jimmy Kimmel! Clike here for more details and tickets.
Their new album Sounds of The Universe drops April 21nd!

I'm beyond ready for the Little Boots album, Hands coming on June 6th! She recently stopped by the NME studios and gave this great performance of 'New In Town.' She has come a long way since making videos in her bedroom for YouTube!
We have another treat for you, the nice mellow Golden Filter remix of New In Town which I quite enjoy!

In case you've never seen or heard it, What's A Girl To Do? was Bat For Lashes debut single, here is the video, a masterpiece of its own!

Here is a semi-new demo from Shirley Manson of Garbage. It's not bad, anyone else think she sounds like Liz Phair?
Just posted a writing demo of a song i wrote with my friend Greg (Kurstin) a year or so ago.
It's one from the "So Called Noir" Series.
I just stumbled upon it tonight when I was looking for something else and I listened to it and thought: fuck it why not post it for all the people who wrote me lovely things about my mum when she died. It's the least I can do.I owe you a song for sure
So to all my darklings and noirlings........thankyou.

The video for TIGA's Soulwax produced single Shoes looks a bit Lady Gaga (the outfit), a bit Roisin Murphy (the outfit and the hat!)...and a bit creepy! I could take it or leave it, it moves really slow...not until the end does it catch my attention fully. Worth a watch or two!

I have the urge to blast LYKKE LI's Youth Novels album probably once every few days. Her voice is beautiful, it's one of the best to come out last year. Dance Dance Dance is a favorite track on the album, and it's been given a bit more enegry by Grandtheft.
DANCE DANCE DANCE (GRANDTHEFT REMIX)
If you listen closely, you'll notice the synth is a bit reminiscent of Janet Jacksons 'When I Think Of You'. Someone make a proper mash-up! Hmm, maybe I should do it?!
Watch Li perform the track with Bon Iver. Awesome stuff!

NO DOUBT are back with a new tour + track called Stand and Deliver. Another cover, of an 80's track by Adam Ant. To be honest i'm not excited that much...I'm ready for some new original material, are you all with me?
STAND AND DELIVER (DOWNLOAD)
In the meantime, they've got this really great widget with tour information and free downloads of their ENTIRE catalog when you purchase a ticket. How awesome is that? Come on Madonna...you are next!

If you are a GOLDFRAPP fan that's been stuck in a daze since the departure of their signature electro tracks after the release of the more folky Seventh Tree...you'll enjoy this!
I've found a rip of the rare promo disc that contains the instrumental versions of the entire album.
SUPERNATURE (INSTRUMENTALS)
What are your favorite Goldfrapp tracks? What direction do you think they'll go next?

THE GOLDEN FILTER have gotten a lot of hype throughout the online music community for half a year now. They are pretty good, Solid Gold is a pretty sick track. The band has just released the official video and it's fields of gold...literally! I love Russ Chimes, and he remixed it beautifully.
SOLID GOLD (RUSS CHIMES REMIX)
Check out this blog for some more remixes and tracks by The Golden Filter.

One of the worst U2 songs ever gets remixed by Justice. Who knew? Smart decision as Justice throw a bit more fun into the track that bored me beyond belief at the Brits. Love the remix...blast it!

We love Buffetlibre Dj's here at Hard Candy, show them some Myspace love!
I've always had a soft spot for MARILYN MANSON. Maybe it's the makeup and costumes, or his deep sexy voice. He's back with a new single, We're From America. Political commentary, screamery and some sexy guitar are all there.

BAT FOR LASHES is one of my favorite artists to emerge as of late. I can't stop listening to Daniel. It's like a cross between Pat Benatar's 'Love Is A Battlefield' and 'Cloudbusting' by Kate Bush.
The video is sick...watching Natasha drive that old Volvo with the Wizard of Oz monkey's flying after her. We've already posted it. You can hear the highly recommended album, Two Suns in FULL over at Myspace.
Best of all, here is a behind the scenes look of the filming of the video...loving Natasha!

WILLIAM ORBIT has just released a home produced video for Optical Illusions, which sees its release on iTunes April 13th...from the forthcoming album My Oracle Lives Uptown. The version of the song you'll hear in the video is the Dr Meaker remix, which will appear on the single.
I'm a huge fan of DIY music videos, I have a bunch hidden somewhere from when I was a kid...but then again don't we all?!

As April Fools day comes to a close, i've got a smooth and sultry track from FIONA APPLE for ya, and it's definitly not a joke! I've yet to post anything on her yet, probably because shes not too quick with the releases. This jazzy track is a cover version, originally by Cy Coleman, and will be included on Then Was Then, And Now Is Now. A tribute album in his honor.

Does anyone remember when the original jazzy/full orchestral version of Extraordinary Machine leaked? It was so much better than the official release! Anyone happen to have it? hardcandyblog@gmail.com.
Now Fiona...it's time for a proper new release!

The 'jackalope' that graces the single cover of newcomer duo MIIKE SNOW's track Animal reminds me of a logo or design I would have created for one of my other blogs, Rabbit Stew. Alas, someone got to it before me!

An April Fools if there ever was one! Check out NINE INCH NAILS new album, Strobelight!
It comes with an amazing line up...
