BRITNEY SPEARS is hot off the heels of a tour that nobody thought she'd finish. I remember watching a bunch of kids dancing to F.U.C.K.M.E. during the show and it felt so, so wrong. Oh well. Max Martin (the guy who wrote the horrid If You Seek Amy) is back with Britney on new track 3 which is an ode to threesomes. Awkward. Half rave, half electro-dance - it's catchy and a slight progression away from her most recent albums Circus and Blackout. - Matt
We had the chance to ask Elly from LA ROUX some questions via email. She doesn't give much away but she's certainly an interesting character who I'd love to chat with in more detail one day. What a stellar record she put out this year - La Roux is now available for us in the U.S. to purchase. - Camille
What is your opinion on Lady Gaga? The media is always talking about her fashion sense - you are also involved in the creation of your own clothing.
( This question was ignored...LOL)
We saw your very first performance here in NYC at Studio B. Were you nervous or surprised that night that everyone was so excited to see you and knew your songs already? Tell us what was going on through your head that night.
That was one of my favorite shows ever. We had no expectations before we went on - it was very early for us to be in the US so it felt wonderful to see a crowd that were not only up for it but knew the songs as well.Thank you, the internet.
Was music an escape for you growing up?
My dad bought me a guitar when i was 4 years old and i wrote my first song when i was 7 so I've always known i was going to do this even through the dark times, and there were plenty of them.
You have cited David Bowie, Madonna and Annie Lennox as influences. What is your favorite album by each of those artists? and what about those artists inspires you?
David Bowie - Young Americans
Madonna - Madonna
Eurythmics - Touch
How are you handling fame? is it everything you thought it would be?
I try not to let fame intrude on my life. I keep my private life private, I don't go courting celebrity and I don't tend to go to where the paps are waiting for you....
Where do you envision La Roux in the next 5 years?
Doing online PR.
We heard that you don't like to hear your work remixed, is this true and if so why?
I like to hear great remixes of La Roux - Skream , Zinc and Data have all done amazing things to our work. I just Don't like to hear bullshit mixes.
Where do you find inspiration from, and who are your favorite artists currently releasing music?
From love. Glass Candy and White Lies are my two favorite current artists.
How do you feel about being an artist in the digital age? do you feel it works to your advantage or against you?
It makes it easier for people to buy your singles rather than the whole album and that can be frustrating.
Do you consider yourself a role model for the younger generation? Give us something inspirational to end with...
My favorite word is cunt.
It's the end of an era! Today's release of Celebration fulfils MADONNA's contract with Warner (yeahhhh she's free!) the release is a little flawed with some shoddy edits used on the CD and some glaring omissions, but all in all it's the most comprehensive package we have of over 25 years of Madonna's work, packaged with some fabulous artwork so who can really complain? Pick it up at Amazonor Itunes
Are you ready to take a little trip down memory lane with me? Over the next week or so in celebration of Madonna's career to date and the new release, we're gonna be bringing you our 'Best Of The Era' series so stay tuned for Madonna goodies!
Ok I'll admit it! I'm ridiculously excited to see KYLIE MINOGUE in concert here in NYC in just under two weeks. Kylie was the first pop star I ever loved but surprisingly I have never seen her live!
Kylie touched down in the U.S last night and her tour starts in San Francisco in a few days (so jealous the west coast gets her first) Check out this cute little video of Kylie in her final days of rehearsals for the tour! and also Perez got the Setlist from Kylie herself last week, I'm pretty happy with it and I'm sure she'll add Spinning Around (well she better!)
**SPOILER**
Set List: Overture Light Years Speakerphone Come Into My World In Your Eyes Medley: Like A Drug/Boombox/Can't Get You Out of My Head Slow 2 Hearts Segue/Wow White Diamond Confide In Me I Believe In You Burning Up/Vogue Locomotion On A Night Like This Kids In My Arms Love At First Sight Better The Devil You Know
Still on a high from the amazing interview with JULIETTE LEWIS, I headed down to the main floor to check out her performance. After seeing her at Summerstage In NYC this summer, I was excited to see her do a full set and she did not disappoint! Juliette has such an phenomenal energy which really lends itself to performing on stage. Her energy never drops and you can tell she pours her soul into each and every song.
Some of the highlights of the show for me were; an outstanding performance of one of my favorite tracks from Terra Incognita, "Suicide Dive Bombers" in which Juliette lept over the barrier diving into an excited crowd. They appeared to DROP her but picked her up and she carried right on! An energetic performance of "Terra Incognita," I loved the conga player! and "Pray For The Band Latoya" which is one of my personal favorite songs.
She also played many of my favorite Licks numbers including "Pray For The Band Latoya" as i mentioned, "You're Speaking My Language" and she came back on stage to end the show perfectly with an encore of "Hot Kiss," with headdress (just as Matt was hoping for!)
As always stay tuned to our YouTube Channel for all the videos and check Flickr for all the pictures!
"Hard Candy! If It Ain't Hard, It Ain't Good!" Juliette Lewis
Saturday night Matt and I excitedly rushed to the Fillmore Irving Plaza here in NYC, to chat withJULIETTE LEWISbefore she hit the stage. Juliette spoke with us about her music and fashion influences, the transition from The Licks to The New Romantiques, and the fabulous new record Terra Incognita.
It was fantastic chatting with Juliette, who has such an enigmatic personality! We loved hearing about her passion for music and evolution as a musician. There was much more we wanted to ask her we could have gone all night, but she had a show to do! Alas, we could not get the Carla Tate out of her - hopefully someday Juliette, someday!
Our first *ever* video interview is below. Stay tuned to Hard Candy for the concert review loaded with pics and videos! - Camille
Big thanks (and high fives!) to Hannah from Sheena Beaston who filmed our interview. She also got the chance to talk to Juliette, so check out her interview here!
Oddly enough (as big of a fan as I am), i've never been a huge fan of super popular track MUSIC by MADONNA. I've seen her perform it more times than I can count - in more varying ways than I can count. The remix i've got for you today was sent to us by Dani Villa&Botz & Flydrums and it's fuckin' hot! I've also attached my favorite video of M performing a mash-up of Music & Disco Inferno which was aptly titled Music Inferno during '05's Confessions Tour. The record was also performed on Sticky & Sweet, Drowned Worldand Reinvention Tour. It's always better live. Which is your favorite? - Matt
I'm probably gonna get shot for this one but I don't care! I'm loving the MILEY CYRUS song PARTY IN THE USA for which the video was just released. I thought Miley had just got me the one time with SEE YOU AGAIN but this is another track I like! (Oh please stop with the eye rolling - you have to admit it's catchy!) and for all those up in arms about Miley's push up bra, she's not much younger than Britney was when she came out in the schoolgirl outfit!
Don't think I can't see you nodding your head like "Yeah", shaking your hips like "Yeah"!
A slow jam remix of NOT MADE FOR LOVE from METRONOMY by Leo Zero is our exclusive for the day today. If you will be on the west coast this October, be sure to attend their live show with support from Hard Candy favoritesFool's Gold. We've also got mixes by Alalal and Joakim (which I prefer) so you best check those out as well! These guys have been on my radar for awhile - can't wait to hear where they go next.

10/11 Portland, OR - Holocene
10/12 Seattle, WA - Nectar Lounge
10/13 Vancouver, BC - The Red Room
I strongly recommend you preview their album Nights Out on iTunes, great release. - Matt
MICHAEL JACKSON made me proud and very excited when watching this video clip of 'The King' performing one of my absolute favorite tracks (and SWV's hot sample of it) HUMAN NATURE. He looks a bit older, but then again he IS older. MJ still killed it, I love watching these kind of rehearsal videos. It was going to be an amazing show, amazing!
John Shearer for AEG/Getty Images
On October 28 we can still see the show via THIS IS IT, the film that was ever so quickly made and You will HAVE to purchase tickets before this comes out in theaters because it's a limited run - that is, if you are attending. Personally I think Michael has now become a 'cash cow' for those who are in charge. They killed him either literally or in spirit - he is now worth more money dead and it's a shame. - Matt
Well this a downer! Keisha the only remaining original member of the Sugababes has left the building! Lets see if they are any good with out Keisha and what her solo career holds! My favorite Sugababe was Siobhan but the band was still good without her. I think things really went down hill for them when Mutya left.
"The current line-up of the Sugababes has disbanded.
Heidi Range and Amelle Berrabah will continue as the Sugababes and will be joined by new member Jade Ewen. They release their album ‘Sweet 7’ on November 23rd through Island Records.
Keisha Buchanan will continue to record for Island Records as a solo artist"
MARIAH CAREY visited Oprah at her show in Central Park NYC on Friday. I wanted to go but much to my disappointment no-one I knew won tickets! She performed 'I WANT TO KNOW WHAT LOVE IS' looking like she walked off the "Vision of Love" video set!
I've have had mixed feelings about Mariah's version of this classic song, but I think its growing on me. She gave one of her best performances in recent memory (I guess now Whitney is back she has to up her game!) She even managed the "dog whistle" at the end of the song, probably enhanced a bit, but it almost felt like "Emotions" there for a quick second. I wonder if any garage doors opened?
As you know we've supported LADYHAWKE since the very beginning when Matt & I were both blown away by BACK OF THE VAN. This week we finally got the chance to see her live not once but TWICE. Firstly, at the Apple Store in Soho where she performed intimate performance to a small, but very excited crowd. Then at the Fillmore Irving Plaza on the Perez Hilton tour. For me, the main event was at Irving Plaza (She was equally as good both nights, I just got to dance my ass off better at Irving Plaza!)
Ladyhawke is not only talented but equally endearing. She admitted to being shy and almost shocked by playing for a crowd - which only made us scream louder in support of her. The minute she started to play you'd never know she was shy! She sounds just as good live as on the record, and rocks out twice as hard on the guitar!
The show was fantastic and the crowd was so into it, singing along with every song. My favorites of the night were: the one that started it all - "Back Of The Van","Dusk Till Dawn," which came alive for me live the 'Bang, Bang, Bang on the wall' line causing fist pumping and random banging of objects all round!, and my favorite track from the album, the classic "My Delirium," which incited euphoria in the crowd and closed the show. You can watch all the videos from the show right here!
If you get the chance to catch her on tour please do so and support this amazing new artist, who's debut album LADYHAWKE (available on iTunes now!) is one of my favorite in recent years! - Camille
Tickets for the Perez Tour available here. Or see her Down Under!
Tonight night I'm heading to Irving Plaza in NYC to seeJULIETTE LEWIS and her new band perform! I saw her at Summerstage a few months ago and she was amazing (Check the videos here). My only complaint was that the set was too short, that won't be the case tomorrow!
I'm excited to hear more of her new material from her new album TERRA INCOGNITA and hopefully a few classics from her days with The Licks. In you are in NYC tonight come along and rock out with us! Tickets available here
Check Juliette's video of her passing our fliers promoting the show on the streets of NYC!
I LOVE New York City!! Another of my favorite acts is coming to town! The wonderful FLORENCE & THE MACHINE have announced a couple of U.S. dates. The NYC date at the Bowery Ballroom is on sale now... so do the right thing and get a ticket. You snooze you lose! These will be gone in a heartbeat!
Dates:
Oct 27 New York, NY - Bowery Ballroom Oct 30 Los Angeles, CA - Troubadour Nov 2 Toronto, ONT - Mod Club
GOLDFRAPP have been very quiet on the music front, recording new tunes (no news on a particular sound yet) for a new album and writing the score for NOWHERE BOY - a biopic on John Lennon. Allison just posted this on their official blog...
"We have finally emerged from an intense period of work and i’m pleased i can now tell you about it (as it is official). we have written the score for a film called “Nowhere boy”. it’s about John Lennon as a boy and stars Aaron Johnson, Kristen Scott-Thomas and Anne Marie Duff. it’s Sam Taylor-Wood’s first feature film and it’s truly amazing that they gave us the oppotunity to do this. we are all really excited about going to abbey road studios soon to record the strings with the full orchestra. the film is closing the london film festival and is premiered on 29th october at odeon leicester square. now our work on the film is almost finished, we will carry on writing the Goldfrapp album."
Can't wait to hear the new material! In the meantime check out the video for one of my old favorites...Train.
Don't you just love this album cover? As usual DRAGONETTE is hitting the mark with everything; artwork, videos and music! I'm now even more excited about the new album FIXIN TO THRILL due be released on October 6th and physically in most of the world October 2oth.
While we wait for it, here is a killer remix ofPICK UP THE PHONEby RICHARD X. Dragonette and Richard X are really a match made in heaven! If that doesn't satisfy your thirst for new Dragonette material head over to Sheena Beaston to download Stupid Grin!
Tracklist: 1. Fixin To Thrill 2. Gone To Far 3. Liar 4. Stupid Grin 5. Easy 6. Pick Up The Phone 7. We Rule The World 8. Big Sunglasses 9. Okay Dolore 10. Come On Be Good 11. You’re A Disaster 12. Don’t Be Funny
When I said it was MADONNA madness this week, I wasn't kidding! The final *new* track from CELEBRATION has leaked, and it's called IT'S SO COOL. This was a track written with MIRWAIS way back in 2001, assumed to have been intended for the American Life album, which has now been reworked by PAUL OAKENFOLD.
It features some of the same hokey lyrics as Hey You, She's so obsessed with us saving our souls and prophets, I love it! The track is only available on the iTunes digital version of the album.
I've been fighting MARIAH CAREY nostalgia/fever the past few weeks, listening to old tracks and reminiscing back to those days before the R&B era swallowed her into a black hole that i'm not sure she'll ever completely crawl out of. SOMEDAY is one of those classic tracks that I will never get sick of. I've always preferred this particular remix to the album version, mainly because you can hear the last note for much longer and there are some extra synth's in there.
The best version of Someday is by far from the MTV Unplugged EP released back in 1991. I know all the vocal parts by heart, i'm not gonna lie! Watch it below...
It's MADONNA madness this week again, first with her incredible tribute to Michael Jackson, then Revolver leaks - now we've got the second video for CELEBRATION. This version includes footage shot of fans dancing, dressed like Madonna. Think Everlasting Love. It was inevitable. A real video please! Ah, one can only dream.
MADONNA 'lines 'em up and watches 'em fall' in REVOLVER, the second *new* track from her last record with Warner (yay!), CELEBRATION. We've heard the demo of this track already (which isn't far from M's version), and I def. wasn't a huge fan of that. The same goes for this version, it's catchy, it's Madonna...so of course I am excited and blasting it right now (on the second play already). Who ever thought she'd work with 'Lil Wayne? His part is hardly noticeable - thank the lord. Still can't wait for It's So Cool, which will be released on the iTunes version of the album.
The picture above was taken during the Drowned World Tour, here is the performance - skip to the way end to watch Madonna pop one of her dancers. It makes me laugh every time I watch! Classic.
I know you all know this but I'm truly thrilled WHITNEY HOUSTONis back! I loved the Oprah interview. She was not afraid to ask the probing questions and I believe that Whitney gave honest answers. I must admit at times I felt like I was looking at a therapy session! The performance was also great, she held that last note of 'Didn't Know My Own Strength' like it was 1992!!
Matt and I have been waiting for the MILLION DOLLAR BILL video to premiere and People Magazine give us a sneak peek of it which you can view here! Looks like its going to be a great video! Whitney looks fantastic with plenty of different looks.
I personally enjoy the scene where the money is flying all around her (well it had to be done didn't it!) and her funny little arm motion for 'Up, Down, Left, Right' that she did in the Good Morning America performance makes a reappearance, (obsessed much? )
This video makes me laugh just a little too hard. Listen to President Obama calling KANYE WEST a 'jackass.' Well - someone had to say it! West finally apologized directly to Taylor, about time!
After hearing the clip of the new ALICIA KEYS song DOESN'T MEAN ANYTHING I decided to revisit "Songs In A Minor," which was my favorite album of 2001, and surprisingly it has held up very well. Classics like "Falling" never get old it seems!
Anyway, I digress! Alicia is coming out with new material soon and here is the full version of "Doesn't Mean Anything," which just leaked! What a pretty song that really showcases her vocal ability! It's been a while and I'm glad she's back!
I sat with my mouth wide open when TAYLOR SWIFT won her first MTV Video Music Award. It wasn't because she won - it was because of a rude and un-professional 'artist' (alternate words 'big baby and fucking asshole' come to mind.)
Anyway, I don't know much about Taylor's career and haven't heard any songs from her besides the VMA performance (which was great!), but one thing I can say is that she knows how to take a blow in the most classiest of ways - and she's funny too. Check out how she addresses the 'incident' with the ladies on The View. Oh, and, she still hasn't been contacted by him. I guess twitter messages typed all in CAPS are expected to be enough...
I've never really considered myself a JAY Z fan but watching his September 11th benefit concert at MSG on Fuse I was surprised at how many of his songs I both knew and liked and felt he put on a really great live show. Fresh from that I was excited to see his performance with ALICIA KEYS at the VMAs. I've really been feeling the song Empire State Of Mind and they killed it live on Sunday, closing down the show in style!
I guess you can't write a post about this performance without mentioning the absurdity of Lil' Mama who jumped on stage right at the end of their performance! I love how they just ignored her and went about their business, I personally would have liked to see her rugby tackled and dragged off stage! ;)
You may remember I asked what was next for MADONNA the other day, and it's REVOLVER of course! Here is a thirty second preview of the second new track from her forthcoming 2-disc Greatest Hits collection Celebration. It sounds just like the demo version that leaked a while ago, featuring someone of little importance to me on vocals. So far it's no Celebration for me, I much prefer that track! I wait with baited breath to hear what Lil' Wayne's contribution to the track will be!
It's HERE! We've been talking about it in the office for the past few weeks wondering what WHITNEY HOUSTON was going to say to Oprah in this 'tell all interview'.
Here is the first video, and the rest follow as links below. Commentary to come as I continue to watch this!
Wow I wasn't expecting such a straight up pop song to leak from BEYONCE's catalog. Kind of sounds like Sweet Dreams but a 'Day' version. LOL! Where is all this material? There just has to be more! I remember when they rumored she was working with the Freemasons, we never got to hear that (damn!). Anyway, it's called CONTROL. Stargate production I assume? Sweet synths, dance-able and fresh, the perfect end to summer. Can't wait to hear more from B just as long as she progresses in musical style. That voice can go even more places than its been! I'm still waiting for a dance album...still waiting!
Fresh from her awesome performance last night at the VMAS JANET JACKSON took to twitter with this message:
"I hope u guys enjoyed us tonight. It was very special for me n I have a very special gift for all of u at JanetJackson.com"
That special gift is a hot new track from her! I'm really feeling MAKE ME, it sounds like early Prince to me, which is never a bad thing!
This is what I've been waiting for from Janet, I'm so excited for new music from her now. I think people tend to forget how great she is after a few flop albums but she really is a brilliant artist! Time to revisit all the old albums while we wait!
After Kanyestole the stage during what was Taylor Swifts most exciting moment of her life thus far - winning an MTV Video Music Award, I was hoping BEYONCE would address the issue since it was her song he thought should had won. She did just that, all after a kick ass, flawless performance.
B didn't use over the top staging (not that I don't love that), or flashy backgrounds, just a bunch of lights, a kick ass track and that powerful voice and killer moves!
To close what was a spectacular VMA show we got to see the full trailer for the upcoming MICHAEL JACKSON movie 'This Is It.' This show looks like it would have been a show like none other, and you know it takes a lot to impress me! It's just such a damn shame that he wasn't around to see this through, but I'm pleased the rehearsals were captured on film so that we can see what they had planned. Get ready to see this movie when released on October 28th!
PINK absolutely stole the show when it comes to talent tonight - she brought a flying trapeze right into Radio City Music Hall to perform SOBERand flew above the audience like it's her daily hobby. Sorry Gaga, Pink stole the 'rising from the stage on a wire' trick better than I've seen since Madonna's Drowned World Tour rendition of Sky Fits Heaven. It always comes back to Madonna with us Hard Candy writers. *lol*
Class act performance and my favorite of the night. My heart was in my throat the entire time - I finally felt what I see lacking in this industry is a show of raw talent. It made me laugh when they announced that she and Shakira had the same outfit on the red carpet. How embarrassing!
LADY GAGA takes to the MTV VMA 09 stage for the first time in her career. She performed her hit PAPARAZZI - which i've always enjoyed as a pop tune. I think the performance was great, the musical re-interpretation of the song and Phantom of the Opera inspiration was great. If she was going to do the blood and hanging herself, I would have made it so much more dramatic. Spew blood all over those kids screaming on the sides. I guess that's too much for MTV. It's definitely not comparable to Madonna's debut performance on the first MTV VMA's. It's really hard to shock nowadays - we gotta go back to talent!
We ALL waited with baited breath for the JANET JACKSON performance tonight! Right at 9 we saw blonde hair walking through the darkness up to the stage and knew MADONNA was coming! After a honest and touching speech it was time for the main event!

The dancers rocked it out to some of MICHAEL JACKSON's best songs including Thriller, then the big screen cut to Scream and we knew it was time! Janet bust onto the stage dancing like it was 1991 all over again! She looked great and danced with a true passion and fever, of which her brother would be proud. She synced up with Mike on the video slamming out every move with all her might and all to soon it was over and she looked up for her big brother with a look showing just how heartbroken she still is.
Good job Janet! looked great, danced great and made her brother proud! Long Live The King!
KANYE WEST had yet another asshole moment tonight at the MTV Video Music Awards - West steals the microphone from Taylor Swift while she was accepting her first award, a crowning moment in a young artists life. Who cares what Kanye thinks, who cares!? Why didn't security get him off faster? Beyonce must have been so embarrassed too! That was totally uncalled for and immature. Watch it now! Oh, and remember when he flipped out last time? Anger management classes would do wonders. I'm glad MTV asked him to leave. (Well, duh!)
Just like clockwork, he's home and has made a statement - in CAPS no less. Guess he must really mean it this time.
I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED! I LIKE THE LYRICS ABOUT BEING A CHEERLEADER AND SHE'S IN THE BLEACHERS! ........................ I'M IN THE WRONG FOR GOING ON STAGE AND TAKING AWAY FROM HER MOMENT!................. BEYONCE'S VIDEO WAS THE BEST OF THIS DECADE!!!! I'M SORRY TO MY FANS IF I LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!!! I'M SORRY TO MY FRIENDS AT MTV. I WILL APOLOGIZE TO TAYLOR 2MRW. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!! EVERYBODY WANNA BOOOOO ME BUT I'M A FAN OF REAL POP CULTURE!!! NO DISRESPECT BUT WE WATCHIN' THE SHOW AT THE CRIB RIGHT NOW CAUSE ... WELL YOU KNOW!!!! I'M STILL HAPPY FOR TAYLOR!!!! BOOOYAAAWWWW!!!! YOU ARE VERY VERY TALENTED!!! I GAVE MY AWARDS TO OUTKAST WHEN THEY DESERVED IT OVER ME... THAT'S WHAT IT IS!!!!!!! I'M NOT CRAZY YALL, I'M JUST REAL. SORRY FOR THAT!!! I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR TAYLOR AND I'M SINCERELY SORRY!!! MUCH RESPECT!!!!!
Photo by Getty Images MADONNA's speech at this year's MTV Video Music Awards was one of the most inspiring i've heard in a very long time. She stood firm, emotional - laying a sly eye to Jackson's father Joe.
She addressed the issues, fondly remembered her date with Jackson in the early 90's and made sure to let those who failed 'The King' know that they let go of an icon. The music industry needs her lead - and more like her. 'Long Live The King!
I recently got the chance to speak with Chris Lowe from the PET SHOP BOYS! for a Brit like me, who has grown up listening to and loving their music my whole life, this was greatly exciting!
Chris gave a great interview in which he talks about how it feels to be back on top of the U.S. dance charts with Love. Etc, who he'd like to work with, a memorable moment at a Nina Simone concert and what they'll be working on when the Pandemonium Tour is over! Listen to it here!
It's been KYLIE MINOGUE mania in my house this weekend! (That was totally me and my housemates singing into various remotes Friday night!) With Kyles hitting New York in just a month, excitement is rapidly building! For me, that means playing anything and everything Kylie, and added to my playlist this week is the full length version of CHIGGY WIGGY! It is a collaboration between Kylie and A.R. Rahman and it's pretty damn catchy! You can check out the making of the video below also!
I warn you Hard Candy may be looking like Kylie.com in the coming weeks!
We're very excited to watch the development of new artist THECOCKNBULLKID. Her catchy and fresh track Clean Apart's got us itching for more. Camille and I had a chance to ask her a few questions about her recent release the Querelle EP, her inspirations and of course the meaning behind the stage name!
The name thecocknbullkid is certainly something we've never heard before. How did it come about? It's basically a tongue in cheek way play on calling myself a bullshitter. I didn't stick with my own name because I think it's sounds too earnest. There is no more deplorable trait than being too earnest.
What can we expect from you during the end of '09 and beyond? The album. Which will be quite a departure from what I have done so far. I feel like everything pre-2009 have been my demos. I've been finding my feet. I want to make a timeless and accomplished record.
We are loving 'Clean Apart' tell us more about the meaning of the track and it's lyrics. It's pretty self explanatory. I'm not a fan of explaining lyrics because i think it ruins something for the listener. Some people have interpreted it as an acerbic break up song. I guess it could be.
Do you have plans to promote/tour in the United States? We are waiting for you here in NYC! Yes definitely! I had plans on coming this summer but the sound of the album took a turn so it made sense to finish the whole thing before we went out there . It never felt particularly finished or confident enough to go over with at that point. I knew I had to write some better songs before I did that so that's what I'm doing. It's pretty much done now so I should be coming over by the end of the year.
Where do you draw inspiration from, specifically for your music and look? Everywhere! People, Love, Art, History, Extremes. I'm constantly on the hunt for inspiration, i draw it from the most unusual places at times. I just need a word or a phrase that strikes a chord with me and I'll go off on a tangent and write a song. it can be amazing when you get it right.
Tell us more about what we'll hear on the Querelle EP, which is available now? How did the artwork for the EP come about? The songs on the EP mainly explore the dark side of love, self loathing and sabotage. The artwork was inspired by the film Querelle which is quite a dark and twisted love story. I wanted the imagery to marry the masculine to the feminine, i wanted to put two extremes together. I liked the imagery of a middle aged man with a beer gut delicately holding a beautiful flower.
We love that you are influenced by all of our favorite artists here at Hard Candy. What current/upcoming artists do you listen to? Im the worst person to ask as I'm not really listening to current music! The only current act I'm listening to at the moment is Florence, its because her music sounds timeless. I also listen to Metronomy and an upcoming band singer and writer called Wolfgang. But especially now because I'm recording an album, i have no head space to listen to anyone else . There is a fear you'll become too influenced by it so I'm not listening to anything else too faithfully.
Who do you work with to record and produce your tracks? Tell us about the songwriting process for you, and the equipment/sounds you use. I'm working with a few producers on this record now, including Gonzales and Peter (of Peter, Bjorn and John). Its very much a collaborative process. We'll often start on the piano and build up around that. Making percussion with pots and bottles. Peter has some amazing south American bits of percussion with names I cant pronounce that we often end up using as well.
Writing this album, i'm learning so much every day. I've started to implement the rule that if none of us is getting excited after 15 minutes, we bin it and start another song. It's a very staunch mindset you have to take up but It seems to be working.
Put your ipod on shuffle, what are the first three songs that pop up? Any special significance to you? Dudley - Yeah Yeah Yeahs. This is from the Show Your Bones album but Fever To Tell is my favorite album of theirs, in fact its one of my favorite albums full stop.
Fine Time - New Order. Blue Monday was one of the first songs to get me into electronic pop music.
Aunt Dot- Lil Kim. Lil Kim is one of my favorite artists! I just love strong women and have always been drawn to female artists who say whatever they want. A lot of people think she's vulgar but I think she's misunderstood, I love her balls.
If you could chose one artist who would be the soundtrack to your life who would it be and why? Hard one! Madonna cos she's done it all.
Tell us something random about yourself! Both my pinky fingers have been broken since childhood. I didn't realize until quite recently.
Sunday night JANET JACKSON is supposed to be performing a tribute to her brother on the VMA's, I'm excited to see that I'm sure that she'll do a great job!
I just saw on MuuMuse Janet also just gave her first interview since the death of her brother to Harper's Bazaar you can read the full interview here. I thought it was very moving and enjoyed the her shared memories of Michael!
It's been DRAGONETTE madness this week! We just saw the release of a video clip for Pick Up The Phone, the next single from upcoming album Fixin' To Thrill. MARTIN SOLVEIG and the dragon lady herself recorded BOYS & GIRLS for MA DAME - a project by fashion icon Jean Paul Gaultier. I'm lovin' the David E Sugar remix. We were also sent a version by Les Petits Pilous, which i'm sharing with you even though I think it's terribly annoying (way too squelchy!) Take your pick below, or download them all. Fixin' To Thrill is released in Canada on the 29th of September.
*Remixes courtesy of http://www.ma-dame.com. Download them via this link, all you have to do is give up your e-mail address.
Check out the video for the clip below, the band will be touring the U.S. + Canada this Fall - catch them on following dates...

The smokey, chilled vocals of ANGELA MCCLUSKEY can be heard all over Telepopmusik's Genetic World. Remember Breathe? Angela has teamed up with a group called LMNTL for I'M NOT THE GIRL, who don't seem to have an online presence in the least. So secretive! MuuMuse found this one awhile ago and i've had it starred to post here - great one! Angela's solo album The Things We Dois out now so check it out!
FEVER RAYbrings chills to my spine in the video for SEVEN off her debut album Fever Ray. I keep asking myself...is that the creepy old lady from Drag Me To Hell? I can't tell her from the sheep in this video. I absolutely love it - Johan Renck is a talented producer, oddly enough he was responsible for Madonna's Hung Up! Remix highlights for this single are from Hard Candy favorites CSS and an awesome dub-step remix by Martyn (below).

We've waited, we've waited - and she's given it to us! Fans of WHITNEY HOUSTON rejoice today as we get to see her new, softer 'I've made it thorough' side in the video for I LOOK TO YOU. It's nothing special, reminds me a bit of Gloria Estefan's Reach video that was the theme for the Olympics in '96. Can't wait to see what she does for the feel good Million Dollar Bill that I have found myself playing almost every day. If you haven't given the full length album I Look to You a listen, check out 'Nothin' But Love,''For The Lovers' and 'Song For You.' She looks great in the video, go Whitney!
As we prepare for THE SOUNDS tour hitting NYC next week (much excite!) here is another hot remix! This time BEATBOX is given the remix treatment by Jen Lasher! Watch out for the Beatbox video premiering very soon!
Here is the new JULIETTE LEWIS video for FANTASY BAR from her new album Terra Incognita. I love this video it totally captures the raw energy that is Juliette, and does that girl now how to work a costume or what? Who else could pull off the Indian Chief look so well!
Juliette also did the Craig Ferguson show last week and you can watch her perfomance and interview here
I don't think anyone ever expected NATALIE IMBRUGLIA to show up nearly naked in a music video - but there's a first for everything. I've raved about WANT since it's leak, and then of course when I found the slick Shapeshifters remix. Now, it's time for the video. I love it. It's right up there with Beauty on the Fire, but never have I seen her looking so fresh and revitalized.
Natalie records a message to her ex (Silverchair's Daniel Johns possibly?), exclaiming that she hopes he got all that he wanted...because, well, she didn't! We've all been there!
DRAGONETTE are one of those bands that you can always expect a quality, well crafted pop song from. They've done it again with the video premiere of PICK UP THE PHONE. The videos they've released have always carried an air of kitsch to them - this one involves a lot of mischief - and, who doesn't love to cause trouble? Go Martina!
According to famed producer Richard X's official website, he has done a mix for the track - can't wait to hear it! If you are a fan of Sophie Ellis Bextor, Annie, Saint Etienne and Roisin Murphy (which you know we are) you'll be excited for the mix too!
Just another reason to love CHARO! This Labor Day Weekend CHARO performed on the MDA Jerry Lewis Labor Day Telethon (a great cause to support) Take a look at CHARO performing the Rihanna hit PLEASE DONT STOP THE MUSIC in Spanglish! Charo as always takes the crowd by storm and it's great! Watch Charo bump and grind her way through the audience and even Jerry Lewis himself! This is classic, priceless and amazing!
Love CHARO?!?!?! Add her as a friend/fan on Facebook by CLICKING HERE! And Thank you to the page for posting this amazing footage!
How i've loved EMPIRE OF THE SUN since their debut Walking on a Dream landed. WITHOUT YOU is the next single from the album, and the video has just premiered (see below). This is one band that has been on-point through every release. The album and single packaging artwork is so carefully crafted and cohesive. Not to mention a reel of music videos that put the music and artwork to life.
METRONOMY have always been pretty darn cool - part electronic-saxophone laden instrumentals, part vocal pop. Their album Nights Out hasn't been released here in the states (such a shame) but you can still get the import. Remixed by Alalal and Joakim, tthe new single NOT MADE FOR LOVE is ready for your listening pleasure below.
It's been a few years since the release of the flawless Overpowered from ROISIN MURPHY. She has to be one of my all-time favorite artists - her style, voice and stage presence is rivaling most pop stars today. She's an inspiration for an upcoming generation of dance/indie music. DEMON LOVER and BILLIONARE are new tracks that Ms. Murphy perfored on Burlectric. Can't wait for the high quality album versions, they sound like dance floor smashers!
For die-hard fans of the dark yet poppy electronic sound of Overpowered, these new tracks sound like the perfect progression from that. Enjoy!
Well apparently I was slacking on my MADONNA news this week but the STICKY AND SWEET tour ended in Israel on September 2nd and there were PLENTY of surprises for the audience.
Madonna's kids were heavily involved in the show. Rocco danced on stage to 'Celebration' before the show started and then sat with DJ Enferno during his Mom's performance of Music! Lola played the Piano during 'Devil Wouldn't Recognize You' and danced on stage with her Mom for 'Give It 2 Me'....and I mean danced! That girl had all the moves down!! (I guess she was rehearsing when she was in the back the other time!)
These kids are just adorable and so talented. Lola is a brilliant dancer (and piano player it seems.) I have to admit I was tripped out by how grown up Lola is and how much like her mother she looks (especially in those glasses... she IS Madonna in the 80's.) Big props to M for letting her kids have fun with her on stage!
Now begs the question what's next in Madonna world?
I've always been a semi-closeted fan of NATALIE IMBRUGLIA. She's release two top quality albums, her debut Left of the Middle(remember Torn?) and the follow up White Lilies Island (Beauty On The Fire is a masterpiece). After dropping into a more acoustic and somber style for what felt like ages, Imbruglia is back with the upbeat and fresh WANT, a track co-written by Chris Martin of Coldplay. There are also great set of remixes for this release, my favorite of which was crafted by house magicians The Shapeshifters. It takes a bit to built - be patient!
Currently you can pre-order the upcoming album, Come to Life. October 20th is the release date.
Natalie recently sat down on Austrailia's The Rove to discuss the new album, working with Chris Martin of Coldplay - shes very entertaining and sweet. They did a great job of re-capping her entire career before the interview, so it's worth a brush up on your Imbruglia!
I figured i'd take us back a little over a decade, to when MARIAH CAREY's ultimate feel-good track ALWAYS BE MY BABY topped the charts. I remember being so excited every time the video would come on MTV, the soft focus and vibrant colors are beautiful...and who wouldn't want to tire-swing over a lake at night?
I've found a great remix, with a lot of alternate vocals. Best off, there is a NO RAP version (can't stand the raps). Check it out...
I always fantasized that i'd jump into the water from a tire swing and have such a love affair like those two kids, I think I may go do that today. If you've forgotten what I mean, take a look below...
I've been hesitating to comment on WHITNEY HOUSTON's comeback performance Good Morning America in New York's Central Park this past week. Why didn't I attend you ask? I had to work, so Youtube videos and a DVR had to suffice. She performed the set on Tuesday, to be aired on Wednesdays morning show. Rumors and rants flew around the web right after the performance, slamming Whitney for 'losing her gift' and then blaming Oprah for losing her voice. (oops! - she really shouldn't have done that one)
Critics are just playing into the spectacle of her past, I mean, come on...watch her strut on stage for Million Dollar Bill and tell me she doesn't still got it!
If you watch Whitney's performance, you will see a woman who had fallen off the path and has picked herself up. The lyrical content of I Look To You is very inspirational and you can feel she wrote them from her heart, and hard earned lessons in life. Not to mention, tracks like Nothing But Love and the 'where did THAT come from' dance beat of Song For You.
Okay, sure, she kinda dropped off the boat during I'm Every Woman, I laughed a bit, but I saw her overexcitement and happiness just take over - you can't always expect an artist to perform as they did decades ago, especially during something so emotional and epic as such a comeback. She warmed the crowds hearts, and got them jumping out of their seats with an energy and talent that is only possessed by a select few in this world. Come on Whitney, we know you can take us there again!
An emotional performance of title track I Look To You - sung to her mother Cissy and of course to 'you and you and you and you you you' below.
It's about time ANNIE! I've been burning out Anthonio and all it's remixes (especially Designer Drugs) all summer, waiting to hear what she had next. SONG REMINDS ME OF YOU is the new single, and a low-budget yet stylish video fits Annie in a Roisin Murphy style outfit (shoulder-pads included) and her own unique lipstick necklace getup shown above on the official single cover.
I've heard pretty much all of the new album, Don't Stop, which leaked months ago. Fans are in for a treat. She's wearing the same outfit in the video as on the album art - love her style.
It's definitely not Antonio #2, hear something new from Annie below.
I was very bored of SHAKIRA during Hips Don't Lie and Beautiful Liar with near look-alike Beyonce while it seemed the rest of the world couldn't get enough. I've always thought she had raw talent, watching her perform and sing (especially in Spanish) is always an inspiration.
So, I can't lie, i've been blasting both the single SHE WOLFand it's Spanish-language counterpart Loba (which I actually prefer much better than the English version).
There was a She Wolf album sampler that made its way around a few days ago - i'm not too impressed with the rest of the tracks but still hopeful!
Can I also express the fact that her caged-in dance moves in the video for the track (which I love and am sure you are all practicing them in front of the mirror) - go behind the scenes during filming of the clip below.
I know there are more LEONA LEWIS fans out there than anyone can count, so I figured this would be a must post just for the fun of it. My immediate reaction to the track was 'i've heard a version of this before' - well, we all have. Not that I don't think it's a quality tune, because it definitely is.
Thanks to our friend MuuMuse for revealing the truth. The producer of the record is Ryan Tedder, who gave us Beyonce's overplayedHalo. Come on Tedder, try something new, we will love you for it!
This is an obviously safe track for Leona (not straying too far away from Bleeding Love), but her voice still shines through and sets her apart from most of the diva vocalists of our time. I'm sure after a few plays i'll be enjoying it, and I can definitely hear it on the radio - which will be very soon. Beautiful cover art as well.
You may be familiar with the name MORGAN PAGE because he is a producers that has created some stellar remixes for some of the biggest names in pop including Katy Perry and Madonna (I first became aware of Morgan because of his fantabulous remix of Miles Away.) FIGHT FOR YOU is Morgan's latest single taken from his album due Spring 2010.
The track will be available on iTunes & Beatport September 8 and includes remixes by Sultan & Ned, Beltek, DJ Dan and Bass Kleph. For now you can grab the original at RCRD. LBL
As we eagerly await the debut album from DON DIABLO here is one of the cuts that did not make the album, due to not fitting with the sound. If this is the quality of the 'did not make the cut stuff' then we I think can expect GREAT things from those that did! This funky little track is called GET ON THE FLOOR, dance up a storm to it this labor day weekend! Enjoy!
Quite the great MashUp! Here is Call Me by BLONDIE mashed with Can't Get You Out Of My Head by KYLIE MINOGUE! Pretty great if you ask me! Then again it's Kylie & Blondie... you really can't go wrong! This mash was created by MadMixMustang [MMM] from what I can tell, either way a great site to check out for mashes! The artwork for this track is pretty sweet too!
Take a listen to the upcoming ROBBIE WILLIAMS track titled BODIES in the YouTube below! Curious what everyone out there thinks! I know I'm a fan! Robbie will be releasing this track on October 12th from his forthcoming album Radio Killed The Video Star.
If you don't know these guys by now, you most definitely should! THE AVETT BROTHERS are an amazing band that is getting ready to release a new album titled I AND LOVE AND YOU this September 29th 2009. You can pre-order this album, listen to music, check out tour info and more by checking out their site TheAvettBrothers.com and learn more about them and fall in love with the brothers and their music.
Below we have posted a video performance to their single I AND LOVE AND YOU from SXSW this year for you to take a look and listen! The single is available on their site too! As well as an EP with the same title and all of their previous works! I And Love And You is an inspired track from a performance they had in Brooklyn @ The Galapagos which is captured in the lyrics! ...Perhaps that's why I love it so!
Not much to say about this one, basically because it speaks for itself! Here is JAY Z with a track I love & a great video to go with it... 99 PROBLEMS! The version below came on randomly the other day on the IPOD and is a fave! Needless to say the volume went up & the windows came down for 99 Problems but a bitch ain't one! Hit Me!
Gotta love FLEETWOOD MAC and there legendary song GO YOUR OWN WAY! Here are two different mixes of the track that are sure to please! I personally enjoy the Dave Aude version, but for all you electro fans we have a mix for you too! Either way you go, you can never go wrong with Fleetwood Mac!
The boys from 3OH!3 are at it again and they have now added in vocals from yup... KATY PERRY to the song STARSTRUKK which can be found (w/o Katy's vocals) on their album WANT. I do prefer the version with Katy Perry, she definitely adds something to the song... perhaps 3OH!3 has another hit on their hands, I think they do... but Don't Trust Me! :)
As if the WHITNEY HOUSTON track MILLION DOLLAR BILL was not fantastic enough... add in some mix magic by the FREEMASONS and it gets that much better! Totally lovin' this mix and can't wait for more mixes of this outstanding track! Although I am very sure that the Freemasons will hold the title for one of the best!
Great video flashback for you today from HEART with their amazing ballad ALONE. Take a look at the Wilson sisters belting out some great vocals that have the power to pull on every one of your heart strings and feel the passion of this track! ALONE is one of my all time favorite songs so... take a listen... take a look! PS... HEART RULES!
